  • Car Con Carne – #56: The ‘Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work’ Special Edition

This week sees the return of the annual “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work” Day, and Car Con Carne is a proud participant!

For this special edition, I took my daughter and son to the Grayslake location of Dog’n Suds, the well-known drive-in chain. Over footlong hot dogs and root beer, we talk about pressing concerns like:

    Nap habits
    Favorite snacks and meals
    Favorite subjects in school
    “Snack” hot dogs
The “ceremonial” aspect of serving vegetables for dinner
The children’s general interest in becoming broadcasters (spoiler warning: OUCH.)

Warning: There’s a dangerously high concentration of adorbs-ness in this show. Proceed with caution.

  • Car Con Carne – #54: Herm’s Palace with Tim Virgin

I’ve known and adored fellow radio personality Tim Virgin for a very long time. For this week’s show, Tim met me at Herm’s Palace, a long-standing hot dog joint in Skokie. I had the Polish sausage with pastrami, he had the fried salami.

Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode:

Chest hair doesn’t grow as fast as facial hair.
Tim’s dark stools match his dark heart.
Tim is a one-man Audubon Society.
Everything good in life causes problems.

We chat about the career paths we should have taken, the authenticity of Tim’s voice, Coachella vs. Bonnaroo and Tim’s time working in the record business. We also talk a lot about music (shocker), including lengthy discussion of Phil Collins-led Genesis, GnR, Rush, Yes and Adam and the Ants.

    Other highlights:

“Those shorts are falling down her hips!”
“The one with the beard is clearly a bear.”

  • Car Con Carne – #51: Devil Dawgs with Sandy King Carpenter

You like conflicts? This episode gives you God vs. the devil! Husband vs. wife! Producer vs. professional wrestler! Movie producer/writer/graphic novel creator Sandy King Carpenter sits shotgun to talk about her comic book work (e.g. John Carpenter’s Asylum), working with a young John Hughes on “Sixteen Candles,” her working relationship with “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and how she met her husband John Carpenter (as in, John Carpenter). I also learn that, were John Carpenter to come after me, he’d kill me “creatively.”

To tie into the themes Carpenter writes about in John Carpenter’s Asylum, we get Devil Dogs from the South Loop and eat them in front of the old Chess Studios building (2120 S. Michigan Avenue).

  • Car Con Carne – #49: Fabulous Freddies with Martin Atkins from Killing Joke & Pigface

Martin Atkins played with Johnny Rotten/Lydon in Public Image, Ltd. He was a member of Killing Joke. He created the industrial rock supergroup Pigface (now celebrating its 25-year anniversary). He’s played with Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. He’s written indispensable books about the music industry (Tour:Smart, Band:Smart and Welcome to the Music Business: You’re F****d!). And now, his career path has brought him to the front seat of my Mazda 3 to eat Italian Beef sandwiches at Fabulous Freddies in Bridgeport (not all that far from U.S. Cellular Field).

Over the course of conversation, Atkins talks about his relationship with John Lydon (it’s up and down). He also tells some amazing Pigface stories. For instance: A guy once played a shopping cart on stage; it was exactly what you’d expect. On the more scandalous tip, Martin once turned the tour bus over to a pair of newlyweds who did a lot of what newlyweds do. He talks about the music industry, writing process and a lifetime’s worth of memories I can’t help but be awed by. And I also discovered in this episode that Martin doesn’t need water to survive; he sustains himself on au jus.

Note: There are a few salty words in this week’s show, but they sound really good and proper when Martin says them.

  • Car Con Carne – #48: Dante’s Pizza with Herb Rosen & Kelly Galassi

This week’s guests are Herb Rosen (owner of Liar’s Club & musician: Rights of the Accused and Beer Nuts) and Kelly Galassi (bartender/charitable soul). We visit Dante’s Pizza at 2825 N. Milwaukee for a trio of ginormous slices. As Kelly says, “You’ve gotta do the New York fold.”

First up: We talk about the “Benefit for Flint” happening at Liar’s Club (1665 W. Fullerton) on Sunday 2/28. Bring water. Bring money for water. They’re going to drive it to Michigan after the benefit. Kelly came up with the idea; she’s cool.

And then there’s Herb, a man with an almost supernatural level of charisma. Speaking of supernatural, Is Liar’s Club haunted? Everyone seems to think so. It was even on T.V. At the very least, it’s a confirmed fact that a guy killed his wife with a hatchet there “back in the day.”

Herb talks about his rock and roll history, from his days in the Chicago scene of the 90s to the rock scene at Liar’s Club (why was Josh Homme hiding upstairs one night?). I make a comic book metaphor to describe Liar’s Club. It meets with Herb’s approval.

Also in the show, we learn from Herb’s experience that flatulence ruins any hiding-from-the-police moment. And finally, who is Tim Murphy, and does he listen to Car Con Carne?

  • Car Con Carne – #39: Allende with Comedian Paul Faravhar

“What goes on here? This is like a boarding school.”

This week’s episode finds James and comedian Paul Faravhar sitting a few doors down from Allende, a dive-y burrito place in Chicago’s Lincoln Park. As they sit and talk about the band Rush, the art of comedy and the simple joys of a steak burrito with no sour cream, they can’t help but notice what’s going on in the house next to where they’re parked. Is a party going on there? And if so, why are there only two girls and a ton of guys?

  • Car Con Carne – #31: Sweet Baby Ray’s

Flying anytime soon? Consider the mile high club upgrade. Or just vomit in a bag and leave it for the next passenger. Both shocking airline tales are covered on this week’s show.

Oh, and James, Mike and Skimmer visit Sweet Baby Ray’s in Elk Grove Village. We hate to spoil the episode, but the meal was beyond redemption.

  • New Addition: Car Con Carne

When I started this web venture a few months ago, I wanted to use it as a platform for some ideas I’d been kicking around for a while and also give a digital shout out to some of my friends who are creating their own content.

Here at Gabatron you’ll see original content like my daily shtick (Gabatron Morning Briefing) and my projects with Dan Levy (Gabatron) and Elliott Serrano (Geek/CounterGeek). You’ll also see  content mixed in from people like Matt McClure and his friend Alyson Charles (Tub Talks), Darren Marlar (Daily Dose of Weird News) and Mike Stiles (Social Marketing Quickie). They are some of the extremely talented people I’ve had the chance to work with over the years in the wonderful and strange world of radio. I really like the idea of sharing their work and maybe exposing it to people who wouldn’t otherwise see it.

Enter James VanOsdol. James and I met during my glorious eight months at WGN Radio. James is a pro, a veteran of the radio trenches and an absolute delight to work with. About a year ago, he and his friend Mike Bratton started a podcast called “Car Con Carne” where they would visit local Chicago BBQ joints and then chow down in James’s Mazda 3 and talk both about their food and also what was going on in the world and their lives at the time. I immediately liked it a lot, and asked James if I could add it to the list of podcasts I show off on Gabatron, to which James responded with an enthusiastic “Meh, I don’t see why not.”

So Car Con Carne will be popping up every other week here at Gabatron. Please do give it a listen, I think you’ll like it. And of course, if you do like it, please think about stopping by their Patreon page.

  • Car Con Carne – #24: Pork Shoppe – Not-Hot Chicken, Naughty Yoga & MD20-20

The new Pork Shoppe is a “sweet looking space,” but it’s also more expensive than its Avondale counterpart. Mike and James head to Andersonville to see if the pork belly pastrami holds up.

The beverage choices are especially questionable, though the Bible would say otherwise.
