Gabatron Morning Briefing – 5-27-16: Shall We Play A Game?

The U.S. Defense Department is still using 8-inch floppy disks in a computer system that coordinates our nuclear weapons. Remember the scene at the beginning of the movie War Games with those ancient computers in the missile silos? Basically what they are saying is the military is quite literally still using those same computers. Most of us don’t have phones that are a year old.
Donald Trump has the delegates to clinch the GOP presidential nomination. He becomes the official nominee once delegates cast their votes on the convention floor in July. Now, obviously he turns his attention to Hillary Clinton.
Nina Metz in the Chicago Tribune has written about the disappearance of the Chicago accent in movies and TV recently. Chicago’s in a bit of a film golden age, since plenty of movies filmed here and there’s a cavalcade of Dick Wolf series going on at the moment. Sure that’s great and all, but when was the last time you heard a character drop in a “DA BEARZ” or direct someone to “Over by ‘dare at the Jewels”? And Nina says it’s not just in pop culture, it’s in real life as well.

Uber and Lyft are threatening to leave Chicago if they end up being hit with new regulations. The city council is currently debating an ordinance that makes drivers for the online ride-hailing company get chauffeurs licenses like taxi drivers and fingerprint background checks.
