Gabatron Morning Briefing – 8-13-15: Enough With The Homework

Researchers say first graders today have three times the amount of homework recommended by experts. It’s also having a neutral, sometimes even a negative effect on their performance.

Interesting Stat of the Day: 3.5 million. That’s the number of drivers on the road who are aged 85 and older. That’s a 47 percent rise between 2003 and 2013.

A new study contends having a child can make parents more unhappy than divorce, unemployment and even the death of a partner. Basically the thinking goes that having a child ends up isolating new parents socially more than any other big life change.

In science news, the International Astronomers Union has opened voting to the public to name 20 planetary systems.

Former President Jimmy Carter announced he has been diagnosed with cancer.

Plus, Uzbekistan Airways is going to start weighing passengers along with their carry-on bags to “ensure flight safety.”
